The United Arab Emirates University has crossed the threshold of 400 granted patents, according to a report published this week by the Emirates News Agency. This latest figure covers inventions aligned with national priorities in sustainability, health sciences and advanced technology. The university’s research office has emphasised the role of these patents in transforming laboratory work into practical applications with economic impact.

University figures show that the majority of the patents were issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The institution secured more than 50 patents from the USPTO during 2025, an Abu Dhabi Media Office summary from December 2025 stated. That output contributed to a global ranking of 67th and first within the UAE for utility patents granted that year, according to a February 2026 university announcement.

The total stood at more than 365 granted patents in February 2026, the Abu Dhabi Media Office reported at the time. Progress since then reflects implementation of the Research and Innovation Strategy 2023-2026 that the university launched in May 2023. The strategy focuses on interdisciplinary projects and industry partnerships to produce research with direct societal benefits.

Khalifa University of Science and Technology secured 60 patents in 2025, an increase from 32 the year before, the institution said in a statement released in February 2026. The result marked its strongest single-year performance in converting research into intellectual property. Similar gains across UAE universities have added to the country’s overall patent activity.

The United Arab Emirates University has expanded its intellectual property portfolio steadily since 2007, according to data published on its research office website. Recent grants have concentrated on areas such as advanced materials, water engineering, energy systems and biotechnology, a December 2025 media office release listed. These fields match the UAE’s priorities for economic diversification and environmental sustainability.

Ongoing research programmes at the university are expected to generate additional patent applications in the coming months, its latest updates indicated. The institution maintains collaborative agreements with domestic and international partners to commercialise selected inventions. Such efforts support the broader national goal of building a knowledge-based economy.
