Khalifa University has shortlisted 63 teams from 26 countries for the Global Water Hackathon 2026 after an initial registration phase that attracted 1,398 students in 238 teams from 56 nations. The selected groups will refine science-based proposals addressing critical water challenges as the program moves into its technical mentoring and validation stages ahead of the December finals. University figures show strong regional representation with the UAE fielding 70 teams in the original entry pool while Saudi Arabia, India and Pakistan also contributed substantial numbers of participants. The shortlist process evaluated submissions on their potential to deliver practical outcomes aligned with international water priorities.

The initiative, run in partnership with UNESCO through the Youth4Water program, requires teams to develop solutions across six themes mapped to UN Water pillars. These cover sustainable desalination and water security, reuse paired with circular economy approaches, AI-driven digital systems for resource management, protection of water quality and public health, climate resilience including the energy-water nexus, and frameworks for governance with cross-sector cooperation. A WAM report on the shortlist noted that the event builds directly toward the 2026 UN Water Conference co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal in Abu Dhabi from December 8 to 10.

Finalists will compete for the Khalifa University-UNESCO Water Innovation Award along with six theme-specific prizes and three strategic recognitions focused on UAE priorities, environmental resilience and industrial applicability. The total prize pool exceeds 290,000 AED according to event documentation, with top teams invited to pitch projects on-site during the conference. Khalifa University’s Center for Membranes and Advanced Water Technology leads the program, which emphasizes structured research phases rather than rapid prototyping alone to ensure proposals undergo rigorous technical review.

World Bank data places the UAE’s water stress level at more than 1,500 percent in 2022, reflecting annual withdrawals far exceeding renewable freshwater resources of under 15 cubic meters per person. Similar pressures appear across the GCC, where Kuwait registers the world’s highest stress ratio at over 3,800 percent while multiple Arab states fall below absolute scarcity thresholds of 500 cubic meters per capita annually, a UNESCWA assessment found. The hackathon therefore addresses a regional reality in which desalination supplies the bulk of municipal needs and agriculture continues to consume the majority of withdrawals despite efficiency drives.

Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, president of Khalifa University, stated that the UAE’s preparations for the 2026 UN Water Conference offer a platform to convert scientific advances into lasting solutions. The program connects student innovators with researchers, industry mentors and policymakers to strengthen youth contributions to the global water agenda. Submissions closed earlier in the cycle with jury evaluations completed by early November, positioning the shortlisted 63 teams to present polished projects at the Abu Dhabi gathering.

Participation spans every continent with notable entries from Australia, the United States, Germany and several Southeast Asian and African nations alongside the dominant GCC and South Asian cohorts. The event’s emphasis on interdisciplinary teams incorporating engineering, data science, policy and environmental expertise aims to produce holistic proposals capable of scaling beyond the competition. Organizers expect the December awards ceremony to feed directly into broader discussions at the UN conference on accelerating progress toward sustainable development goal six.
