The Emirates News Agency reported that a UAE delegation attended the Codex Alimentarius Commission meetings hosted jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization in Geneva earlier this month. The sessions focused on adopting updated standards to protect consumer health while facilitating fair trade practices in the global food market. UAE representatives engaged with counterparts from dozens of member states on technical issues ranging from additives to labelling requirements. This active involvement reflects the nation’s longstanding role in shaping international benchmarks since its early participation in the commission.

A World Health Organization summary of the 49th session placed the gathering from July 6 to 10 as the latest in a series of annual gatherings that have produced more than 200 standards and related texts over decades. The UAE has built on prior successes including its leadership of a proposal for the first international standard on pasteurised camel milk approved by the commission in February 2026 according to an Abu Dhabi Media Office release. That initiative originated from a UAE submission during the 47th session in 2024 and required extensive coordination across regional and global partners. Such efforts demonstrate how national expertise in arid-environment agriculture can inform broader Codex work.

According to FAO data the commission’s standards are referenced in the sanitary and phytosanitary agreements of the World Trade Organization making them legally relevant for more than 190 member countries. The UAE delegation advocated for science-based approaches that balance innovation with rigorous safety testing during committee debates. This position aligns with the country’s own stringent domestic food control regime managed by multiple federal authorities. Participation also allowed UAE officials to share data from national monitoring programmes that track contaminants and nutritional profiles.

Emirates News Agency coverage noted that side events at the Geneva meetings addressed emerging challenges such as sustainable food systems and the impact of climate change on supply chains. The UAE highlighted its investments in food technology and alternative proteins as models that could support global resilience goals. These contributions came alongside endorsements of revised maximum residue limits for pesticides and veterinary drugs. The delegation ensured that outcomes remained practical for implementation across diverse economies including those in the Gulf region.

A Mordor Intelligence industry assessment projected the global food safety testing market to expand at a compound annual growth rate exceeding 7 percent through 2030 driven partly by harmonised standards from bodies like Codex. The UAE’s engagement in Geneva builds on this trend by promoting mutual recognition of certification schemes that reduce trade barriers. Officials emphasised capacity-building initiatives that the country has extended to developing nations through technical cooperation programmes. Such work positions the UAE as a bridge between advanced regulatory frameworks and nations seeking to upgrade their systems.

The commission elected new leadership during the session and set priorities for future work on antimicrobial resistance and novel foods according to a joint FAO-WHO statement. UAE representatives offered to host follow-up technical meetings on specific standards where the country holds comparative advantage. This offer follows a pattern of increasing GCC involvement in Codex activities that has grown since the early 2000s. The Geneva meetings concluded with adoption of several new texts that will now enter national regulatory review cycles worldwide.
