The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that its Assistant Undersecretary for Protocol Affairs received a copy of the credentials from the new Lithuanian ambassador on Thursday. H.E. Saif Abdulla Alshamisi met with H.E. Ernestas Mickus, who was appointed as Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Arab Emirates. Alshamisi wished Mickus success in his new role while highlighting the potential for deeper bilateral engagement.
According to the ministry, Alshamisi affirmed the UAE’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Lithuania in areas that benefit both countries and their citizens. For his part, the Lithuanian ambassador commended the UAE’s regional and international position under the leadership of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Mickus expressed hope to develop relations across multiple sectors during his tenure.
This diplomatic step, where the MoFA receives credentials copy from Ambassador of Republic of Lithuania, follows the standard procedure for newly appointed envoys before they present original letters of credence to the UAE President. The event took place amid a series of similar receptions for ambassadors from various nations in recent months. It signals continued efforts to maintain strong diplomatic channels with European partners.
A Gulf Research Center commentary noted that bilateral trade between the UAE and Lithuania expanded by 124 percent in 2022, making the UAE Lithuania’s top Gulf market. Lithuanian exports to the UAE reached 163 million euros that year, with growth of 136 percent, the center’s analysis showed. Key traded goods included machinery, electronics, furniture and food products according to the same assessment.
The two sides established a joint business council following a 2023 forum in Sharjah, the Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry reported. In 2024, they convened the first Joint Economic Committee to explore opportunities in investment, technology and industry, according to the UAE Chambers. Trade volume rose an additional 22 percent to 216 million euros last year, Lithuanian government data indicated.
