The Emirates News Agency reported that Sultan Mohammed Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Consular Affairs, signed the document on behalf of the UAE while Dr Yousef Al Zoubi, Secretary-General of Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, represented his country. The ceremony took place in the Jordanian capital as part of ongoing efforts to deepen ties between the two nations. This agreement creates a formal platform for addressing consular issues that affect nationals living, working or travelling between the UAE and Jordan. The development aligns with the countries’ shared goal of improving services for their citizens abroad.
According to WAM, the memorandum of understanding will enable the Joint Consular Committee to enhance consular relations and protect the interests of UAE and Jordanian citizens. The body will focus on simplifying procedures related to documentation, visas and legal assistance for nationals in both countries. Regular meetings under the committee will facilitate the exchange of expertise and best practices in consular affairs. Such coordination is intended to resolve cases more efficiently and support smoother interactions between the respective ministries.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasised the value of structured mechanisms like this committee in advancing diplomatic partnerships across the region. Jordan and the UAE maintain active collaboration through multiple channels, with consular matters forming an important element of their bilateral agenda. The agreement provides a dedicated framework that builds upon previous discussions between the two foreign ministries. Officials from both sides attended the signing and expressed support for the committee’s future work.
WAM added that the Joint Consular Committee will operate under clear guidelines outlined in the memorandum to ensure consistent follow-up on agreed priorities. The pact includes provisions for information sharing on policies that affect expatriate communities. Both countries will appoint representatives to the committee to oversee implementation and review progress at periodic intervals. This step is expected to contribute to more effective management of consular files moving forward.
Additional provisions in the memorandum address cooperation during emergencies or periods of heightened demand for consular services. The committee will also examine ways to harmonise certain procedures where feasible between the UAE and Jordan. Diplomatic sources indicated that the agreement reflects the strong foundation of relations that has developed over decades. Future sessions of the committee are scheduled to expand its role in line with evolving needs.
