Sharjah Media City (Shams) has introduced the Bright Ideas media innovation challenge to stimulate new approaches in content development and media technology across the region. The program invites creators and professionals to submit proposals that integrate innovation with cultural values, offering selected participants access to resources for project realization. According to the Emirates News Agency the initiative underscores Shams’ role in building a supportive environment for media entrepreneurship aligned with Sharjah’s vision for the creative economy.
The challenge expands on Shams’ established efforts such as the Shams Award for Arabic Content whose third cycle opened applications in July 2026 with new categories for scriptwriting, soundtrack composition and creative advertising the Emirates News Agency reported. That award evaluates entries on criteria including idea quality, innovation, cultural impact and technical excellence while promoting positive Arabic content values. Submissions for the award closed on October 1, 2026, via a dedicated online platform.
Sharjah24 data from October 2025 on the preceding edition of the Arabic content award showed 48 percent of entries from the UAE followed by Algeria at 31 percent with the best content creator category drawing 37 percent of total submissions and best AI-generated video at 30 percent. These figures illustrate strong regional interest in technology-driven media formats that the new Bright Ideas program seeks to further develop. The award and challenge together form part of a series of measures to empower young Arab talent and elevate professional standards.
A Variety report published in October 2025 noted that Shams has differentiated itself by focusing on small and midsize creators with agile setups and training programs that have reached thousands of participants across directing, editing and production management. The media city has facilitated eight original TV series and supported audience-generated filmmaking projects that earned international nominations. Such outcomes demonstrate the practical results of its innovation-focused model.
Shams launched the Bidayah AI platform in October 2026 to assist entrepreneurs with business planning through five integrated stages from idea refinement to launch the Emirates News Agency stated. The platform employs artificial intelligence to analyze descriptions in simple language and suggest compliant economic activities reducing setup time from days to minutes. Rashid Abdullah Al Obad, director general of Shams, said the platform reflects a belief that every successful project begins with an idea deserving support and growth opportunities.
The free zone established in 2017 by decree from His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi now spans over 2 million square metres and provides licensing, studios and educational partnerships including a master’s degree in digital media and entrepreneurship with the University of Sharjah, a WAM report from February 2025 detailed. Upcoming Shams Studios facilities will add five soundstages equipped for high-standard production. These developments position the emirate to attract both local talent and international collaborations in the media sector.
Additional context from the Shams official website indicates the city maintains a digitally native approach that simplifies company formation for freelancers and enterprises while fostering an ecosystem that aligns with national priorities for knowledge-based growth. The Bright Ideas media innovation challenge will evaluate proposals on their potential to advance industry practices and will integrate with existing mentorship and incubation offerings.
