Emirates News Agency reported that the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games open on Saturday with an evening ceremony at the 50,000-capacity Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio that will highlight Senegalese and broader African cultural identity. More than 1,100 participants including 625 dancers recruited from across the country’s regions will take part in a show running from 18:30 to 20:00 GMT that emphasises inclusion through collaboration with Special Olympics. Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry are expected to attend the event that culminates in the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

The International Olympic Committee figures show 2,655 athletes aged 14 to 17 will compete in 153 medal events across 25 sports with full gender parity achieved for the first time in Youth Olympic history. A Refugee Olympic Team of six athletes based in Africa will also participate marking another historic first for the Games that represent 204 National Olympic Committees. Dakar 2026 follows editions in Singapore Buenos Aires and Nanjing and was postponed from 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic according to BBC Sport data.

Competition venues are spread across Dakar the new city of Diamniadio and the coastal town of Saly with the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium also hosting archery while the Dakar Arena will stage badminton. New sports making their Youth Olympic debut include baseball5 which begins on Friday and wushu taolu while the programme features youth-friendly disciplines such as breaking skateboarding and beach wrestling alongside traditional Olympic events. Road cycling will take place along the Corniche Ouest in Dakar a statement from the organising committee detailed.

The Youth Olympic flame arrived in Dakar on September 12 after being lit in Athens and has since travelled 3,600 kilometres through all 14 regions of Senegal carried by around 450 torchbearers over 30 stages. The relay concludes on Friday at Place de la Nation before the cauldron is lit during Saturday’s opening ceremony according to an Olympics.com assessment. Senegalese wrestling star Blessing Oborududu and Algerian gymnast Kaylia Nemour are among role models recruited to inspire the young competitors during the flame tour.

Senegal committed at least 60 million dollars toward hosting costs under the host contract though neither the local organising committee nor the IOC has released a final budget figure an AFP report noted. The event takes place as the country grapples with debt and economic challenges yet has generated visible excitement in the capital where statues of the mascot Ayo the lion have been installed across the city. President Faye welcomed the flame in September stating that all of Africa’s youth is watching with confidence and pride the news agency quoted him as saying.

A total of 136 Senegalese athletes will represent the host nation across the two-week programme that concludes with a closing ceremony on November 13. The Games also incorporate 10 engagement sports without medals to promote broader youth participation and cultural exchange an IOC breakdown showed. Organisers have positioned the event as a platform to demonstrate the energy and determination of African youth while advancing Olympic values on the continent for the first time.
