The Asian Football Confederation has rescheduled the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 for a December start following extensive discussions with the Local Organising Committee and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation. The 24-team tournament will now run from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, rather than the original dates of January 7 to February 5, 2027. The AFC said in a statement that the new dates will be presented to FIFA for approval. Organisers approved the change after weighing its effects on all stakeholders involved in the competition.

According to the AFC, exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region created substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions that made the original schedule unfeasible. The organising committee stated that the postponement was necessary in the interest of all participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders. A statement from the body added that it would continue working closely with the local organising committee, participating member associations, sponsors and broadcast partners to stage a successful event while minimising the impact of the delay.

The decision follows a series of attacks on Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement. A strike on Riyadh’s international airport last month killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300, Reuters reported. The Houthis have claimed responsibility for multiple incidents including drone launches toward other Saudi locations. A number of sporting events and international conferences in the kingdom have been postponed or canceled in recent weeks amid the unrest, Kyodo News reported.

Saudi Arabia was selected to host the competition across venues in Riyadh, Jeddah and Alkhobar after being awarded the rights several years ago. The Saudi Arabian Football Federation has maintained its commitment to delivering a world-class tournament for the continent. The AFC commended the federation and local organising committee for their dedication to the flagship event. Preparations including the final draw had already advanced significantly prior to the announcement.

The Asian Cup serves as Asia’s premier national team competition and is staged every four years. Japan has secured a record four titles in the tournament, most recently in 2011, according to regional football reports. Qatar hosted and won the 2023 edition, providing a recent benchmark for organisational standards in the Gulf. The 2027 event represents Saudi Arabia’s opportunity to showcase its growing football infrastructure on a continental stage.

National teams across Asia will now benefit from nearly a year of additional preparation time under the revised calendar. South Korea’s football association gains further room to appoint a permanent head coach after operating with an interim appointment, a Kyodo News assessment found. The extended timeline could influence strategic planning for several federations as they align domestic and international schedules with the new window.
