The Emirates News Agency reported that the UAE delegation is maintaining its participation at the 20th Asian Games hosted by Aichi Prefecture and the city of Nagoya in Japan. The men’s football team secured its first point in the competition after falling in the opening match. A report by Big News Network stated that Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi attended the opening ceremony on September 19 and checked on the football team’s preparations.
Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi serves as Minister of Sports, Vice President of the UAE Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Executive Office. He visited the training session of the UAE Olympic football team ahead of its second match. The minister was received by members of the UAE Football Association board including Abdulmohsen Fahad Al Dossari, Fahad Ismail Al Hosani and Yahya Khalaf Al Matroushi.
The UAE has sent a delegation of 165 athletes to compete in 21 sports at the Games, according to Big News Network. The event features competitions across 43 sports and 71 disciplines with 1,407 medals to be awarded across 469 events. WAM noted that the football team is preparing for its remaining fixtures in a competitive group after the initial defeat to Iran.
The football team faced Iran in its first group match and then earned a point in the subsequent game against North Korea on September 20. Group B includes China, Iran, North Korea and the UAE, creating a demanding environment for advancement to the quarterfinals. WAM reported that the side continues its campaign with an eye toward positive outcomes in the remaining matches.
Abdullah Abdulrahman of the UAE modern pentathlon team made the country’s first appearance in that sport at the Asian Games, a Big News Network report indicated. This milestone occurred around the same time as the football team’s point-earning result. The UAE Olympic Committee has emphasised building on such achievements to reflect ongoing development in national sport.
Members of the UAE Football Association board briefed the visiting minister on the team’s technical and organisational readiness during the training session visit. The delegation’s efforts span multiple disciplines beyond football as the Games unfold. WAM data places the opening ceremony and early competitions as the start of a multi-week sporting showcase in Japan.
