UAE Team Emirates announced that Rui Oliveira rode into the leader’s yellow jersey at his home Volta a Portugal after placing fourth in stage one. The Porto native succeeded teammate Julius Johansen, who had held the lead following his prologue victory the previous day. On the route to Sintra, the squad worked extensively at the front of the peloton to control the tempo and position Oliveira for a potential sprint success. Francisco Campos of Team Tavira-Credito Agricola ultimately claimed the stage win after a trio escaped in the final kilometre, according to the team’s statement.

The UAE Team Emirates release detailed how late attacks disrupted the expected bunch finish on the 157.1km stage. Daniel Cavia of Burgos-BH took second with Carlos Miguel Salgueiro of Tavira-Credito Agricola in third, both at the same time as the winner. Oliveira crossed the line two seconds later, an effort sufficient to propel him to the top of the general classification. The Portuguese rider had entered the stage motivated by his runner-up prologue result and a desire for a first professional victory on home roads.

Oliveira expressed satisfaction with assuming the lead in a race close to his heart despite missing out on the stage win. “I am really proud to pull on this leader’s jersey in a race that means so much to me. I used to come and watch the Volta a Portugal when I was a young boy, and me and Ivo dreamed of being here someday,” he said in the team statement. “So to lead the race is amazing, but we did want more today. I was really motivated to try and take the win, so this just gives us more motivation for the next days.”

Figures published by the team placed Oliveira atop the standings with a cumulative time of 3:46:24. Rafael Reis trailed by three seconds in second with Carlos Miguel Salgueiro a further six seconds back in third. UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammate Adrià Pericas sat ninth overall, 17 seconds behind the new leader, as the squad made its debut in the Portuguese national tour this season.

The Volta a Portugal, Portugal’s flagship cycling event that attracts both domestic and international squads, saw strong performances from local riders on the opening road stage. Tavira-Credito Agricola secured the stage victory and a podium place through coordinated efforts in the late break. Oliveira’s ascent to the yellow jersey fulfills a personal milestone for the 29-year-old, who has often served in supporting roles for the UAE squad in WorldTour events.

In parallel team activity covered in the same release, young climber Pablo Torres recovered from a crash to finish eighth on a mountain stage at the Vuelta a Burgos. The 20-year-old attacked after rejoining the main group and limited time losses on the final ascent ahead of his upcoming Vuelta a España debut. Felix Gall claimed that stage victory, per the UAE Team Emirates statement.
