The Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi has joined Abu Dhabi Summer Sports 2026 as the strategic culture partner, the Emirates News Agency reported. This alliance will weave heritage and arts initiatives into the athletic programming targeting children and youth up to age 21, enriching an event that organisers describe as one of the largest indoor sports gatherings in the Middle East. The Abu Dhabi Media Office placed the festival’s footprint at nearly 48,000 square metres while listing 29 distinct sports and physical activities available to participants.
Abu Dhabi Summer Sports 2026 runs until August 23 at the ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi, according to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, which noted the current edition as the largest since the programme launched. The ADNEC Group organises the festival in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and with sponsorship from ADNOC Group, building on attendance patterns that have expanded yearly. A visit by Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on June 30 underscored official support for the initiative’s role in community wellbeing.
DCT Abu Dhabi’s participation aligns with its oversight of tourism, culture and national library sectors, the department’s mandate shows. Previous editions of the summer festival have drawn on similar cross-entity cooperation to offer family-oriented experiences that promote daily physical activity in a climate-controlled setting. The strategic culture partnership extends DCT Abu Dhabi’s event portfolio, which already includes the Abu Dhabi Summer Season and Traditional Handicrafts Festival.
A feature published on partners.wsj.com outlined Abu Dhabi’s sports strategy that targets more than 50 percent growth in visitor numbers between 2023 and 2030 through sustained partnerships across grassroots and elite competitions. The Summer Sports festival contributes to that objective by fostering local participation alongside high-profile commitments such as long-term NBA collaboration and UFC hosting, according to the same assessment. Such layered programming has helped embed the emirate in the global sporting calendar on a year-round basis.
Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who toured the venue accompanied by Abu Dhabi Sports Council Secretary General Aref Hamad Al Awani and ADNEC Group Managing Director Humaid Matar Al Dhaheri, described investment in sport as an investment in people and society, the Abu Dhabi Media Office reported. He pointed to infrastructure advances that create inclusive opportunities for all ages and abilities while encouraging sustainable healthy lifestyles. The 2026 edition follows a similar high-level review of the 2025 programme that highlighted its contribution to quality-of-life goals.
Organisers have expanded the festival’s community programmes each year, the Abu Dhabi Media Office figures show, with the indoor format enabling consistent access despite summer conditions. DCT Abu Dhabi’s cultural contributions are expected to add layers of heritage education and interactive exhibits without altering the core sports focus. This approach mirrors broader emirate efforts to balance physical fitness promotion with cultural preservation across public events.
