The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre announced the findings of its first community-wide Arabic language proficiency indicator on July 17 2026 after testing more than 4000 native speakers across all age groups over the past eight months. According to the ALC roughly 70 percent of participants demonstrated satisfactory performance in the skills assessed even as the study identified morphology as the area of weakest results. The centre noted that participants performed strongly in understanding word meanings within context and positioned the indicator as an evidence-based tool to inform language policies educational programmes and cultural initiatives.

His Excellency Dr Ali bin Tamim the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre described the project as a significant advance in understanding Arabic usage across generations and communities. Bin Tamim said in a statement The community Arabic language proficiency indicator represents an important step in our efforts to strengthen the position of Arabic in society and develop a deeper understanding of how the language is used across different generations and communities. He added that Arabic is far more than a means of communication it is a vessel of identity culture and values and that the data would help ensure future efforts respond to genuine needs while aligning with the UAE Year of the Family in 2026.

The ALC reported that the digital assessment consisted of 12 multiple-choice questions covering morphology syntax spelling and contextual word meanings with analysis based on Item Response Theory to calibrate difficulty and produce standardised scores. This methodology which is widely used in international assessments allowed the centre to estimate abilities accurately across varying proficiency levels. The initiative also supports broader national aims including the forthcoming UAE Arabic Language Law expected to take effect by 2027 by supplying measurable data on linguistic skills throughout Abu Dhabi.

Demographic breakdowns in the ALC findings revealed clear variations with participants under age 24 scoring more than 15 percentage points below older groups to register the weakest overall performance. Emirati nationals achieved a positive rate of 66 percent compared with 73 percent among other native Arabic-speaking residents while females recorded 72 percent proficiency against 68 percent for males. These patterns according to the centre point to targeted opportunities for strengthening skills through tailored educational and community programmes that build on existing strengths.

The indicator is expected to function as a long-term benchmark for tracking changes in Arabic proficiency across Abu Dhabi society the ALC stated. It will help shape initiatives that address specific group needs and reinforce the language’s role in education culture and daily public life. Such data-driven efforts align with ongoing national recognition of Arabic as a cornerstone of identity and shared values in the emirate.
