The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement conveying sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, the Republic of Zimbabwe and its people over the tragedy. The announcement was made through the Emirates News Agency one week after the incident that shocked the southern African nation. Such expressions of support form part of the diplomatic exchanges that have characterised relations between the two countries in recent years.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the helicopter came down at Kudenga Farm in Marondera Rural on September 30, 2026, with no survivors among the five people on board. The victims were named as businessman Wicknell Munodaani Chivayo, his wife Lucy Rujeko Muteke, her aide Saneliswe Magagula, pilot Calvin Tafirei Soda and co-pilot Courage Mutavirwa. Forensic scientists and aviation experts attended the scene as investigations into the circumstances began.
Preliminary reports indicated the Bell 430 helicopter encountered poor weather that may have led to spatial disorientation during the return flight from a rural homestead. Chivayo was a well-known figure with close ties to the political establishment whose death has drawn significant public attention across Zimbabwe. The incident has also renewed focus on aviation safety in the country’s private and commercial sectors.
Information Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana confirmed shortly after the crash that current information showed no survivors among the passengers and crew. Government officials have since coordinated support for the bereaved families while urging patience as the probe continues. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated that more details would be released as the inquiry unfolds.
The UAE’s gesture aligns with its established practice of extending solidarity to partner nations in Africa during times of loss. Bilateral ties between Abu Dhabi and Harare have expanded in areas such as trade, investment and technical cooperation over the past decade. Data from regional economic reviews show rising engagement in mining and agricultural development between the two sides.
In its statement the ministry emphasised its sympathy for those affected by the sudden event. The communication arrived after full identification of the victims had been made public by Zimbabwean authorities. Officials in both capitals continue to monitor the situation as the investigation proceeds.
