Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held talks with President Daniel Noboa during the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to the Emirates News Agency. The two sides examined ways to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation across economic, developmental, investment and cultural areas. President Noboa presented opportunities for collaboration that Ecuador offers as the two officials addressed regional and international topics of common interest, the agency added.

The meeting builds on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement that the UAE and Ecuador concluded in March 2026, a development that the UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade described as a strategic step toward deeper integration. Ministry of Foreign Trade data places non-oil bilateral trade at $373.6 million in 2025, reflecting 3.2 percent growth from the prior year and more than three times the 2019 figure. The UAE accounts for approximately 30 percent of Ecuador’s trade with Arab and African countries combined, according to the same ministry assessment.

Development projects and cooperation agreements exceeding $3 billion are currently under discussion between the two countries, the Abu Dhabi Media Office has stated. These initiatives focus on sectors that include clean energy, advanced technology, mining, logistics and agriculture. Ecuador became the fourth Latin American country to sign a CEPA with the UAE after Colombia, Costa Rica and Chile, official announcements confirm.

An accompanying investment promotion and protection agreement aims to provide a stable environment for foreign direct investment by addressing risks, intellectual property and dispute resolution, according to the Ministry of Foreign Trade. The frameworks seek to link the UAE’s global trade position with Ecuadorian access to markets in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Such measures have supported consistent expansion in bilateral economic activity since the agreements took shape.

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on September 8, 2026, and its general debate ran from September 22 to 28, United Nations documentation shows. The session carries the theme of restoring trust and managing transformation while addressing global challenges through multilateral cooperation. Bilateral discussions on the margins allow participating states to advance targeted partnerships within the larger UN framework.

Separate high-level contacts between UAE and Ecuadorian leaders earlier in 2026 produced additional memorandums on investment exploration and defense cooperation valued at $250 million, the Ministry of Foreign Trade has reported. These steps align with ongoing efforts to diversify trade routes and foster public-private sector links. The cumulative engagements demonstrate sustained diplomatic momentum between the Gulf nation and its Latin American counterpart.
