The Emirates News Agency reported that President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan dispatched a cable of congratulations to Sir Bob Dadae, Governor-General of Papua New Guinea. Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum sent a parallel message to the governor-general while Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan addressed his counterpart in Port Moresby. All three communications expressed wishes for the Pacific nation’s further development alongside stronger ties between the two countries.

Bilateral relations have advanced markedly in recent months with a reciprocal visa waiver agreement that took effect in 2026. The pact permits citizens of both nations to stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period provided passports meet validity requirements. It was formalized at the World Governments Summit in Dubai with UAE Minister of State Noura Al Kaabi and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape in attendance.

Prime Minister Marape held talks in August 2026 with the Ruler of Dubai that centered on aviation connectivity, trade expansion, technology transfer and tourism promotion. The discussions formed part of Port Moresby’s strategy to diversify its economy and integrate into global value chains. Papua New Guinea has set targets to reach a K200 billion economy by 2030 according to the Department of Prime Minister and National Executive Council.

Trade volumes between the two countries remain limited yet demonstrate upside according to the National Trade Portal. Papua New Guinea exported approximately USD 35.8 million in goods to the UAE in 2023 while recording imports valued at around USD 9.3 million. Negotiations continue toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with stakeholder consultations completed in several provinces.

Papua New Guinea observes its 51st Independence anniversary on September 16, 2026, commemorating sovereignty achieved in 1975 after Australian administration. Nationwide events this week include a Unity Walk in Port Moresby that drew thousands and featured cultural performances across the capital. The UAE messages coincide with these observances and reflect growing Pacific outreach by Abu Dhabi.

Papua New Guinea will soon open a resident embassy in the UAE to support expanding diplomatic and commercial links. This follows progress on investment promotion, double taxation and air services agreements discussed in 2025 meetings. Both governments have signaled readiness to broaden cooperation in fisheries, energy and downstream processing.
