The phone call took place on January 14, 2025, the Emirates News Agency reported. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, extended congratulations to the Peruvian foreign minister during their conversation. The ministers also exchanged views on the current state of bilateral relations and potential for further development. Both parties expressed a mutual desire to elevate the partnership to new heights across various domains.

Bilateral trade between the UAE and Peru reached 4.2 billion US dollars in 2025. This marked a 21 percent increase from the previous year, according to economic reports from regional trade observers. Peru’s exports to the UAE totaled nearly 2.9 billion dollars that same year, trade data platforms indicated. The growth reflects increasing economic interdependence between the Gulf state and the South American nation.

A framework agreement on trade, economic, technical and investment cooperation was signed between the GCC and Peru in October 2012, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development records show. The agreement has paved the way for subsequent engagements aimed at diversifying economic links. Negotiations toward a comprehensive economic partnership agreement were launched in September 2025 to build on these foundations. Such pacts are expected to open additional avenues for collaboration in energy, mining and technology sectors.

In the discussion, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed highlighted the strategic importance of relations with Peru. The Peruvian official responded by noting opportunities in trade, investment and cultural exchange, the news agency stated. The call underscored the commitment of both countries to sustained dialogue and cooperation. Follow-up actions will be taken by diplomatic teams to implement agreed points.

The UAE maintains strong diplomatic ties with several Latin American countries, with Peru among its key partners in the region. High-level visits and communications have become more frequent in recent years, foreign ministry figures suggest. These interactions help coordinate positions on international matters such as climate change and sustainable development. The latest phone conversation fits into this pattern of proactive engagement.

Diplomatic relations between the two nations were established in the 1980s. Since then, cooperation has expanded steadily from initial political contacts to encompass broader economic and cultural programs. Embassies operating in Abu Dhabi and Lima support the growing range of joint initiatives, official channels confirm.
