The Abu Dhabi Municipality reported that its Date Harvest Season programme attracted 16,000 visitors during events held this summer at locations including Al Khatam Park. The initiative ran from July 16 to 20 with daily sessions between 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. that combined traditional experiences, competitions and prizes without requiring prior registration. Activities focused on interactive heritage displays to engage families in Emirati customs linked to date cultivation, the municipality stated in its announcement. Such programming formed part of broader seasonal offerings designed to strengthen community ties.

Gulf News reported that separate Rutb Season 2026 festivals organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority across Liwa, Al Ain and Al Wathba drew around 180,000 visitors and 1,500 farmers in total. Those three events featured approximately 60 competitions for dates, fruits, model farms and crafts while distributing 780 prizes valued at more than Dh19 million. Organisers collected over 18 tonnes of dates and fruits from local producers for the contests, highlighting ongoing efforts to support agricultural practices across the emirate.

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi placed the emirate’s overall visitor numbers at a record 26.6 million for 2025, with heritage festivals and cultural events contributing substantially to attendance figures. Major gatherings including similar date celebrations helped drive more than 4.2 million participants to leisure and cultural programmes that year. This context underscores the role of seasonal activities in sustaining public interest in traditional sectors such as date farming.

Abu Dhabi City Municipality indicated that the Date Harvest Season incorporated educational elements on date production stages alongside opportunities for visitors to explore traditional crafts and palm-related knowledge. The events aligned with recent national themes including the Year of Community and Year of Family by prioritising inclusive, multi-generational participation. Local producers gained platforms to present their yields directly to consumers during the activities.

WAM figures show that the inaugural Al Wathba Dates Festival, held from August 3 to 9 as part of the Sheikh Zayed Summer Festival, welcomed 25,108 visitors with 448 contestants entering 18 competitions. That programme distributed prizes worth AED5.677 million and received more than 4,385 tonnes of fresh dates and fruits for evaluation. Festival director Rashid Al Rumaithi noted the event’s success in promoting best practices among growers while preserving heritage for future generations.

Date palms have anchored UAE agriculture for decades, with national production reaching hundreds of thousands of tonnes annually according to long-term agricultural records. Events of this nature provide both economic outlets for farmers and public education on cultivation techniques that have shaped the country’s landscape. The municipality’s latest programme added to a series of initiatives aimed at connecting residents with these enduring traditions.
