The World Heritage Committee inscribed Wadi Wurayah on the UNESCO World Heritage List under natural criteria, the Emirates News Agency reported on the decision. The site in Fujairah represents an important mountain ecosystem within the Hajar Mountains that features permanent water sources and distinctive biodiversity. An amended draft decision from the committee confirmed the addition based on the location’s ecological processes and outstanding universal value. This step follows the UAE’s submission of the nomination file in 2021.

Wadi Wurayah was declared a protected nature reserve in 2009 and became the UAE’s first national park in 2013, according to Gulf News. It was designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in 2010 and named a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve in 2018. These earlier protections formed the foundation for its World Heritage nomination, building on successive layers of national and international recognition. UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre documentation outlines how the park meets the required standards for inscription.

The park covers terrain known for its geological formations, rock pools and support for varied species adapted to an arid environment, a UNESCO assessment found. Conservation measures coordinated by Fujairah authorities and national environmental bodies have included habitat monitoring and restrictions on disruptive activities. Public Authority figures on UAE protected areas show increasing emphasis on such sites to counter regional environmental pressures. The inscription adds Wadi Wurayah to the country’s portfolio of globally recognized locations.

Emirates News Agency coverage described the development as a global achievement that underscores the UAE’s commitment to safeguarding natural heritage. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment contributed technical data to the UNESCO dossier that supported the bid. Regional media outlets noted that the process involved detailed scientific reviews by international experts over several years. This latest designation aligns with the UAE’s broader environmental strategy across its seven emirates.

UNESCO records place the tentative listing of Wadi Wurayah in 2021 before its formal evaluation this year. The site spans roughly 130 square kilometres of unique wadi landscape that retains water year-round in an otherwise dry climate. Previous recognitions helped demonstrate the area’s long-term ecological importance to the committee. Management plans will now incorporate enhanced international oversight to maintain the listed status.

Fujairah government initiatives have promoted sustainable tourism and community education around the park since its initial protection, according to local authority statements. The addition brings the total number of UAE properties on the World Heritage List to four, incorporating both cultural and natural assets. Ongoing collaboration with UNESCO will focus on preservation measures that balance access with protection of sensitive habitats.
