The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has carried out comprehensive works to bolster the federal road network ahead of the rainy season, focusing on drainage systems, bridges and water management facilities. The measures aim to maintain smooth traffic flow and minimise disruptions during periods of heavy rainfall that typically occur in the winter months. A total of 20 response teams stand ready to address any emergencies on federal roads, according to a statement from the ministry distributed by the Emirates News Agency.
Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure data places the total length of federal roads at 925 kilometres with more than 4,200 lane-kilometres carrying significant daily traffic volumes between the country’s main urban centres. The preparations include cleaning of rainwater drainage networks and maintenance of pump stations to prevent flooding on key routes such as Al Ittihad Road and Emirates Road. These steps build on operational plans refined after earlier weather events that saw dams retain millions of cubic metres of water.
The rainy season enhancements align with a Dh170 billion national roads and transport investment programme through 2030 that the ministry announced in November 2025. That programme targets a 73 percent improvement in federal road efficiency by expanding lanes on major highways including Etihad Road to 12 lanes and Emirates Road to 10 lanes. A feasibility study for a fourth federal highway stretching 120 kilometres forms a central element of the long-term strategy.
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, has previously emphasised the importance of proactive infrastructure development to support population growth and economic activity. The current preparations incorporate lessons from 2024 weather events during which the ministry formed seven field teams in coordination with private sector partners to assess and repair damage. Integrated response plans prioritise the safety of road users and the protection of surrounding infrastructure.
Public Authority for Roads and Transport data from related emirate-level networks indicates continued expansion of both federal and local roads to meet rising demand, with Dubai alone maintaining more than 25,000 lane-kilometres across its system. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure coordinates with local authorities to ensure uniform standards across interconnected routes. Officials continue to monitor weather forecasts to adjust deployment of resources as needed throughout the season.
