The Emirates News Agency reported that His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, directed the settlement of debts exceeding AED 17.8 million across 82 cases. Rashid Ahmed bin Al Sheikh, Head of the Emiri Diwan and Chairman of the Sharjah Debt Settlement Committee, confirmed the approval as part of the committee’s work to address financial cases. The action covers individuals convicted in financial matters along with deceased insolvent persons whose estates required resolution. This directive enables the beneficiaries to clear their obligations and restore stability to their circumstances.

The Sharjah Debt Settlement Committee was set up in 2014 under the Ruler’s guidance to handle such citizen requests, according to a Khaleej Times review of the program’s history. It evaluates applications based on documented hardship and legal status before recommending relief. In statements connected to prior batches, bin Al Sheikh has repeatedly tied the work to the Ruler’s aim of ensuring a dignified life for nationals facing debt pressures.

Separate committee data compiled through 2025 placed cumulative settlements at AED 1.35 billion benefiting 2,791 citizens since the first batch, a Khaleej Times dispatch from February 2026 indicated. The program has expanded through nearly 30 batches with varying case counts and amounts. Each round undergoes review to confirm eligibility under the established criteria for financial and humanitarian cases.

Federal-level initiatives have followed a comparable approach to debt support across the UAE, Arabian Business reported in 2025. One such operation waived AED 139.9 million for 222 citizens, split between retirees and social assistance recipients. The Central Bank of the UAE has additionally tracked broader repayment deferrals that reached AED 13.5 billion for more than 135,000 customers by July 2026, according to its published figures.

The Sharjah committee’s latest action aligns with a pattern of periodic interventions that resolve both living and estate-related debts, The National noted in coverage of an earlier phase that had reached AED 786.8 million for 1,576 beneficiaries by 2021. Processing involves coordination with courts and financial institutions to close the files once payment is completed. Citizens receive confirmation once the settlements are executed.

Additional social steps in Sharjah have included inmate releases in select instances to strengthen family connections, Khaleej Times reported in late 2025. The debt program operates independently but contributes to the same goal of community welfare. Committee records show consistent activity since its founding more than a decade ago.
