UAE leaders congratulate President of Armenia on Independence Day through formal messages dispatched to President Vahagn Khachaturian. His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum conveyed their best wishes for the country’s continued development and the well-being of its people. The Emirates News Agency published details of the correspondence, which emphasised the excellent relations between the two countries. The exchange took place as Armenia prepared to mark its Independence Day.
Armenia’s Independence Day on September 21 commemorates the 1991 referendum that led to the country’s separation from the Soviet Union. According to historical accounts, more than 99 percent of voters backed independence in the national poll held that year. The occasion represents the restoration of Armenian statehood after decades of Soviet rule. Celebrations typically include public events and official ceremonies across the country and among the diaspora.
Diplomatic relations between the UAE and Armenia date back to 1992, shortly after Armenia regained its independence, according to foreign ministry records. The two nations have since built a multifaceted partnership spanning political dialogue, economic cooperation and cultural understanding. High-level visits have reinforced the bonds. The latest messages fit into a pattern of annual greetings exchanged on national days. This practice helps sustain momentum in bilateral engagement.
Economic links have expanded rapidly, with non-oil bilateral trade reaching a record $4.5 billion in 2025, according to UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi. Dr. Al Zeyoudi stated that the UAE has become the largest foreign investor in Armenia, overtaking Russia. The minister highlighted a new Services Trade and Investment Agreement signed to boost cooperation in fintech, education, healthcare and renewable energy. Key areas also include logistics, advanced manufacturing and infrastructure.
Figures from the Observatory of Economic Complexity show that the UAE exported $82 million worth of goods to Armenia in 2024, primarily gold, refined petroleum and jewellery. In the same year, Armenia’s exports to the UAE totalled $5.25 billion, driven largely by precious metals and stones. The trade has grown substantially over the past five years despite fluctuations in specific categories. The growth reflects increasing business confidence between the private sectors of both countries. Direct air links, with approximately 26 flights per week, facilitate this commercial activity according to WAM.
The UAE welcomed 95,990 Armenian visitors in 2025, with an additional 15,832 arrivals recorded between January and May 2026, according to WAM data. These tourism flows complement the economic partnership and promote people-to-people contacts. Officials from both sides continue to identify new opportunities in logistics, advanced manufacturing and green hydrogen as part of ongoing collaboration efforts.
