Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority has welcomed educators to the new academic year that commences this week for most private schools, underscoring their vital contribution to preparing students for the future while the sector prepares for significant expansion. The authority’s message, distributed on August 30, 2026, aligns with the start of classes on August 31 and comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen the teaching profession through targeted policy measures and professional development. According to KHDA statistics, the emirate will open 26 new private education institutions this year, creating almost 17,000 additional seats across schools, early childhood centres and universities.

The authority introduced updated guidelines in 2025 to improve teacher recruitment, mobility and safeguarding, which are now fully in effect for the current academic year. These include standardised qualification requirements for all new hires and a mandatory 90-day cooling-off period for teachers seeking to switch schools mid-term, measures designed to enhance stability and quality across Dubai’s private education providers. Existing teachers have until 2028 to meet the new standards, the KHDA said.

More than 24,000 educators and school leaders completed specialised training programmes before the term began, the Ministry of Education figures show. Courses focused on artificial intelligence applications, student assessment techniques, inclusive practices and safety protocols, with separate sessions for leaders on data-driven management. This preparation ensures staff are equipped for the demands of a modernising education landscape.

GEMS Education welcomed 1,550 new teachers from 112 nationalities as part of its intake for the 2026-27 year, bringing its total teaching community above 10,000, the organisation reported. The new recruits participated in an induction event that emphasised the enduring importance of classroom relationships even as technology advances. Tuition fees at private schools have been held steady for the year, providing continuity for families navigating the growing sector.

The KHDA’s academic calendar sets out winter and spring breaks for December and April respectively, with the full year requiring a minimum of 185 instructional days for most private schools. Public schools nationwide are introducing complementary reforms, including the elimination of homework for the youngest learners and a shift away from screens in core subjects for older primary students, according to Ministry of Education announcements. These changes across both public and private systems reflect a broader focus on student wellbeing alongside academic achievement.
