A high-level delegation from the UAE Wrestling Federation visited the headquarters of the Police Sports Association in Abu Dhabi for talks centered on building a framework for shared activities. According to the Emirates News Agency, the discussions covered training exchanges, joint competitions and talent identification programs that could benefit both organizations. The meeting underscored wrestling’s role in building endurance and mental resilience, attributes central to police operations across the UAE. Participants reviewed existing police sports structures to determine how wrestling could fit within them without disrupting ongoing schedules.

The UAE Wrestling Federation was established in 2023 under the leadership of His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak to promote the sport and cultivate a new generation of competitors. The federation’s website states that it seeks to position Abu Dhabi as a regional and global center for professional wrestling while connecting the discipline to Emirati heritage. Federation representatives outlined plans to expand grassroots participation through structured pathways that could incorporate police personnel. This approach builds on earlier launches such as the Challenge Wrestling Championship introduced in January 2024 to discover emerging talent.

The Police Sports Association operates under the Ministry of Interior and coordinates athletic events for law enforcement teams throughout the country. Data from recent reports show that Dubai Police, a major contributor to association-led tournaments, captured 327 local medals in 2024 from more than 1,160 participations across various competitions. The association has signed multiple memorandums with sports councils and international federations to elevate coaching standards and broaden competitive opportunities. Its calendar regularly features shooting, athletics and other disciplines that emphasize discipline and physical preparedness.

Wrestling in the UAE experienced a significant setback when several leading athletes transitioned to jiu-jitsu in the early 2010s, leaving the national program without its top competitors for nearly a decade. An assessment published by The National in 2020 detailed how the sport recovered through renewed investment and the creation of dedicated pathways toward Olympic qualification. The federation has since produced notable results in Asian-level events while maintaining focus on youth development. Collaboration with the Police Sports Association could open additional training resources and competitive outlets for officers interested in the discipline.

Both sides agreed to form a joint working group that will draft specific proposals within the next three months, the Emirates News Agency added. The Police Sports Association has a track record of successful partnerships, including a 2014 agreement with the Dubai Sports Council that expanded support for police athletes. Officials noted that any new wrestling initiatives would align with national sports strategies that encourage wider involvement from government entities. Follow-up sessions are scheduled to evaluate facilities and coaching requirements for potential pilot programs.

Historical participation in police sports has contributed to the UAE’s broader athletic profile, with teams consistently ranking high in ministry-organized shields for overall excellence. Recent editions of the Police Athletics Championship, hosted by Dubai Police, saw strong performances from multiple commands and reinforced the value of inter-agency competition. The UAE Wrestling Federation brings expertise in combat sports development that complements these efforts. The two bodies plan to explore co-hosted events that could debut as early as 2027 if initial cooperation targets are met.
