According to a WAM report, Maryam Almutwa earned bronze in the Youth B Women’s 52kg division on the fourth day of the IMMAF Youth World Championships at Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi, increasing the UAE Mixed Martial Arts National Team’s medal count to 18, which includes six gold, five silver and seven bronze. The Youth B competition for athletes aged 14 to 15 wrapped up that day, with the Youth A category for those aged 16 to 17 scheduled to start the following day and run for three days until the event ends on August 23. More than 1,100 athletes from 55 countries are participating in the championships, the report added.

The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation noted that the UAE had topped the medal standings after the opening day of competition, with multiple gold medals in the Youth D divisions helping establish the hosts as early leaders. This latest bronze adds to a strong showing by the national team, which had previously accumulated 17 medals prior to this latest addition. The event is also serving to bolster Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a hub for international sports events beyond the competitive results.

Mohammed Jassim Al Hosani, a member of the Mixed Martial Arts Committee at the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation, stated in the WAM report that the championship brings together young athletes who could become the future stars of the sport. He noted that some competitors could go on to become world champions, professional fighters or coaches, making the hosting of such events important for the future development of MMA. Al Hosani added that the impact goes beyond competition, as athletes, families and coaches return home with positive memories of the UAE’s organisation, facilities and hospitality.

Abdullah Mohammed Al Jabareen, coach of the UAE Mixed Martial Arts National Team, told WAM that preparations focused on physical and technical readiness as well as adapting to different opponent styles. He emphasised the need for athletes to stay focused and follow their game plan under pressure at this level. The coach highlighted that the results reflect the athletes’ hard work and that competing against fighters from many countries provides valuable experience.

Maryam Almutwa said in the report that one of her bouts did not begin as planned but she recalled her coach’s advice to remain focused until the end. She tried to stick to her plan and not give up when things became difficult, learning not to quit in challenging situations. Almutwa acknowledged wanting a better result but noted that the experience gained would help her improve for future competitions.

The championships have also highlighted the role of families supporting the younger athletes, contributing to the atmosphere at Mubadala Arena and creating a shared experience for all involved. Visitors from around the world have praised the organisation, with Conceicao Manassa Mohanha of Angola commending the welcome, transportation and overall setup that reduced pressure and allowed focus on the event. Natalia Dubrova of Ukraine described Mubadala Arena as a great venue with easy navigation and a positive atmosphere, adding to the good experience in Abu Dhabi since arrival.
