The UAE Judo Federation has rolled out new qualification programmes aimed at building competitive age-group teams, according to an announcement from the Emirates News Agency. The initiative targets systematic talent identification and development across junior and cadet levels, aligning with the federation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the sport’s grassroots and elite pipelines. Federation officials outlined plans that incorporate regular assessment events, training camps and performance benchmarks tailored to different age brackets.

Programmes will cover key youth divisions including under-13, under-15, under-18 and under-21 categories, a structure consistent with international judo competition standards maintained by the International Judo Federation. The qualification pathway requires athletes to accumulate points through domestic tournaments before advancing to national team selection, the federation indicated in its statement. This layered approach seeks to ensure only consistently performing judoka represent the UAE at regional and continental events.

Supporting data from the UAE Judo Federation’s own records show increased participation in youth events over recent years, with hundreds of athletes competing in age-specific tournaments across the country. The new programmes build on this foundation by formalising progression routes that were previously handled on a more ad-hoc basis. Integration with school and club systems is expected to widen the talent pool, particularly in Abu Dhabi and Dubai where the majority of registered judo clubs operate.

Recent UAE performances in age-group competitions provide context for the initiative. The national junior team secured multiple medals at the 2025 Arab Junior and Youth Judo Championships, where federation representatives noted that several athletes had progressed through earlier selection cycles. Similar success came at the Asian Cadet and Junior Judo Championships held in Amman in 2026, with the UAE delegation competing in most weight classes across eligible age groups.

The federation’s broader strategy emphasises development from foundation to elite levels, as stated on its official platforms. Training camps such as the August 2025 pre-season session in Châteauroux, France, for U15 and U18 athletes demonstrate the investment in international exposure for qualified team members. Additional domestic rules for school games and sports championships, which the federation oversees, already incorporate age, gender and weight categories that dovetail with the new qualification framework.

Officials anticipate the programmes will feed directly into preparations for upcoming events including the 2026 Asian Senior Judo Championships scheduled for April. By establishing clear criteria for team selection at each age level, the federation aims to create a more predictable and merit-based system that rewards consistent performance throughout the competitive calendar.
