The Indian Business and Professional Council joined forces with the Consulate General of India in Dubai to stage a commemoration of India’s 80th Independence Day that doubled as a platform for advocating stronger bilateral bonds with the UAE. The August 15, 2026 event at InterContinental Dubai Festival City drew former Indian minister Meenakshi Lekhi, Consul General Dr E. Vishnu Vardhan Reddy and numerous business and community leaders. Organised under the theme “Two Nations, One Heart,” the programme opened with a digitally activated ceremonial lamp that underscored the fusion of Indian innovation and Dubai’s technological landscape.
IBPC Dubai chairman Siddharth Balachandran characterised the relationship as emblematic of borderless global citizenship while crediting visionary leaders in both nations for its trajectory. “I believe and love my country, but I also believe in the UAE, reinforced by a sense of empathy for the world at large. I truly believe this is making us world citizens sans borders. Nowhere else is this more exemplified than in this room. India-UAE is the future,” Balachandran said. He described how the initial spark had grown into a force for generational advancement that both sides now carried forward.
In her keynote address, Meenakshi Lekhi spotlighted the Indian diaspora’s contributions in the UAE and the nation’s rising global profile across multiple domains. “Our soft power is what sets us apart. The UAE represents tolerance and resilience; so does India,” Lekhi said. She concluded that India’s success in science, economy and culture would benefit the wider world, a point echoed by attendees who recognised the partnership’s potential for mutual prosperity.
Consul General Dr E. Vishnu Vardhan Reddy told the gathering that the chosen theme captured the essence of historic maritime, cultural and value-driven links between India and the UAE. The diplomat highlighted the countries’ status as key trading partners, with the UAE ranking as India’s third-largest and India as the UAE’s second according to consular data. Recent trade analysis from industry bodies shows bilateral commerce reached 84.5 billion dollars in 2023 and continues to expand under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which a SESRIC study projected could lift total trade volumes beyond 100 billion dollars within the agreement’s first five years.
Awards were presented to leading executives for their role in fortifying economic connections, the council reported. Recipients included Neeraj Makin of Emirates NBD for innovation in banking, Ahmed Yousef Al-Hassan of DP World GCC for advancements in logistics and Saifuddin Rupawala of LuLu Retail for supporting food security across the region. Founding IBPC members received special recognition while secretary general Dr Sahitya Chaturvedi revealed plans for the IBPC Annual Awards in 2027 to honour excellence in business, sustainability and leadership categories.
The celebration incorporated cultural elements that paid tribute to Indian traditions, featuring a dhol tasha performance and a dance sequence marking 150 years of the national song Vande Mataram. These artistic presentations complemented the business-focused discussions and reinforced the multifaceted dimensions of the bilateral relationship. Participants concluded the evening at a gala dinner that brought government, business and community representatives together to affirm their commitment to shared ambitions.
