The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile and Formula One Management jointly released the 2027 calendar following approval by the World Motor Sport Council, outlining a season that spans 22 countries on five continents. Ten weekends will feature the sprint format, up from six in previous years, with new additions including Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi. The calendar maintains the recent trend of 24 races that has characterised the championship since 2023, according to FIA figures.
The season will open in Bahrain on March 14 with a sprint event at the Sakhir circuit, followed a week later by the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah. Pre-season testing is scheduled for the same venue from February 24 to 27, the world governing body said. Australia moves to the third round in early April and will also host a sprint weekend at Albert Park in Melbourne, before races in Japan and China complete an Asian triple-header.
The European portion begins with the Monaco Grand Prix on June 6, which will mark the first time the prestigious street circuit hosts a sprint race. The Portuguese Grand Prix returns at Portimao on June 20 for the first time since 2021, while the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 4 will feature the shortened format. A rotation agreement sees the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps replace the Spanish round this year, with Barcelona set to return in even years starting 2028, FIA documentation shows.
Later in the season, the Turkish Grand Prix makes its comeback at Istanbul Park on October 3, also absent since 2021. The calendar includes triple-headers in April with Australia, Japan and China, and another in the Americas with the United States, Mexico and Brazil races. Las Vegas will not run consecutively with the final two rounds, addressing team concerns over the demanding schedule, according to Formula One Management.
The increase in sprint events reflects their popularity, with a reported 82 percent of attendees at such weekends saying the format adds value to their ticket. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco, Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, Qatar and Abu Dhabi will all host sprints. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said, “The 2027 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar is a strong reflection of the global appeal and continued growth of our sport.”
The announcement comes as Formula One continues to expand its reach, with the championship having grown from 21 races in 2019 to the current 24-race model that tests logistical capabilities but boosts revenue for teams and promoters. Sustainability efforts guided the grouping of events to minimise travel, the FIA assessment found. The season concludes in Abu Dhabi on December 12 with the final sprint weekend of the year.
