The Zayed Sustainability Prize’s Beyond2020 initiative strengthens healthcare for over 200,000 in India, the organisation’s latest impact assessment shows, by deploying innovations from its past winners and finalists directly to communities that previously struggled with limited medical access. Launched in March 2021, the program extends the founding vision of the prize, established in 2008 to honour the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s commitment to sustainability and humanitarian aid across the developing world. In India the deployments have focused on affordable healthcare technologies and improved infrastructure, resulting in better maternal and newborn care as well as enhanced capacity to tackle prevalent diseases.

According to the Zayed Sustainability Prize’s annual impact report for 2023-24, the Beyond2020 initiative has reached a total of 229,800 people across 18 countries with solutions in healthcare, nutrition, clean energy and water access. That global figure includes significant work in India, where healthcare improvements accounted for a large share of the beneficiaries, alongside parallel efforts in nations such as Vietnam, Rwanda and Ethiopia. The report highlights how these targeted interventions create multiplier effects that benefit entire families and villages over multiple generations.

Emirates News Agency detailed how the initiative partners with local entities to ensure sustainable implementation, avoiding the pitfalls of short-term aid by emphasising training and local ownership of the technologies introduced. One key aspect in the Indian context involved solutions that improve access to essential medication and diagnostic tools in remote regions, directly addressing gaps in the public health system. Such measures have proven particularly effective in rural areas where distance and cost often prevent timely treatment.

A separate assessment published by Reuters noted that the parent Zayed Sustainability Prize has improved the lives of more than 411 million people worldwide since its inception, providing a broad platform from which Beyond2020 draws its proven innovations. The health category, in particular, prioritises affordable and essential healthcare along with maternal and newborn health improvements, aligning closely with the needs identified in the Indian deployments. Prize officials have consistently positioned these efforts as scalable models that other regions can adapt.

The Beyond2020 initiative has also recorded successes beyond India, such as delivering live-saving mammograms in Costa Rica in April 2024 and supporting Rohingya refugees with aid in Bangladesh since May 2021, according to the organisation’s updates. In Egypt a project from September 2020 brought clean energy to a remote village, demonstrating the cross-sector approach that ties energy access to better health outcomes. These examples illustrate the breadth of the program’s reach while maintaining a focus on last-mile delivery.

Organisers of the Zayed Sustainability Prize said the Beyond2020 project addresses global sustainability challenges by translating award-winning ideas into on-the-ground action that delivers measurable humanitarian benefits. The initiative’s work in India forms part of a wider strategy that includes food security for 50,000 people among its achievements. Continued monitoring ensures that each deployment meets its targets for long-term viability and community integration.
