DCT Abu Dhabi has created the new institution to form a central part of the emirate’s music and performing arts environment while advancing goals of wider access to artistic training. The programme will deliver complimentary world-class education in music to help young people uncover and refine their abilities over time, according to an official statement published by WAM. It will also establish structured routes for participants to build competencies through sustained involvement in ensemble work across the coming years.

Facilities are set to open in January 2027 at a site in the Mina Zayed district featuring a 600-seat concert hall together with 18 rooms for rehearsal and practice, all designed by the late architect Frank Gehry. The venue will supply a professional setting that supports group music creation and skill progression for enrolled youths. Additional ensembles targeting more experienced students will join the offerings within the first year of activity.

Applications have opened for the first cohort of 100 children aged six to nine, who will receive instruments at no cost and follow a schedule of four weekly after-school group sessions plus two Saturday meetings each month. Training will cover both Western classical and Arabic musical traditions, creating a blended curriculum that draws from established international approaches such as El Sistema and the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles. The National reported that the long-term focus will allow students to advance progressively through varied performance levels.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said, “The Youth Orchestra Abu Dhabi is an important investment in our future and in our commitment to making culture and creativity accessible to all. Through its free-access to world-class music education programmes, we are creating opportunities for young people to discover their talent, develop their potential and experience the lifelong benefits that music can bring.” The chairman added that beyond technical skills, such programmes help foster discipline, collaboration, creativity and confidence.

The launch builds on Abu Dhabi’s existing ties with UNESCO, which has conducted multiple training courses with DCT Abu Dhabi on cultural education and intangible heritage since 2019, a United Nations document shows. A separate UN youth affairs report noted that the UAE recorded strong advances across youth development indicators from 2021 to 2024, including gains in policy alignment and engagement metrics. These foundations position the youth orchestra as an extension of ongoing cultural and educational investments in the region.

Further ensembles and expanded enrollment are planned in subsequent years to accommodate a broader range of ages and skill levels throughout Abu Dhabi. The initiative underscores a commitment to nurturing talent through accessible, high-standard facilities and instruction. Gulf News coverage indicated that the programme will integrate into the emirate’s wider strategy for a vibrant creative sector.
