Children’s National Hospital in Washington has praised the United Arab Emirates for its healthcare advancements with a focus on pediatric and maternal services according to the Emirates News Agency. The recognition highlights a partnership dating to 1985 during which the hospital has treated thousands of Emirati children for conditions ranging from cardiac issues to cancer. Substantial UAE funding has enabled research that generated 82 U.S. patents and improved surgical techniques for young patients globally.

According to the hospital the UAE provided an initial $150 million contribution in 2009 to launch the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at its Washington campus. A further $35 million gift announced on September 26, 2024 targets prenatal neonatal and maternal health projects that extend the long-term relationship. Hospital leadership described the support as transformational for both local and international care standards.

Michelle Riley-Brown the president and chief executive of Children’s National Hospital said “Children in the Washington, D.C., area and across the world benefit greatly from the breakthroughs that have emerged from the incredible decades-long partnership between the UAE and Children’s National.” UAE Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba noted that the continued support promises even more breakthrough innovations in pediatric medicine. The comments followed a visit to the facility by UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The hospital is currently treating 40 Emirati patients a hospital statement indicated. Thousands more from the UAE have received specialized care over the past three decades for neurological disorders cancer and congenital heart disease. A new agreement expands cooperation with Dubai Health and Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital to include advanced training for medical staff.

In an announcement on its newsroom Children’s National Hospital said the deepened partnership with Dubai Health and Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital will incorporate extensive education programs and clinical support. Previous cooperation had already delivered case reviews and cardiac intensive care nurse training to strengthen capabilities at the UAE’s first dedicated pediatric facility. The initiative aims to elevate health outcomes across the region through shared expertise.

World Health Organization data shows the UAE has achieved validation for trans-fat elimination as a public health problem and maintains near-universal coverage of births attended by skilled health personnel. The country reports low under-five and neonatal mortality rates that reflect broader system improvements in preventive care and service delivery. These gains complement the specialized pediatric advancements recognized by the Washington institution.

Total UAE contributions to Children’s National Hospital now exceed $215 million according to hospital records. The funding has also supported the Research and Innovation Campus focused on rare diseases precision medicine and genomics. Officials from both sides continue to explore additional avenues for collaboration in pediatric research and training.
