The Emirates News Agency reported that the Federal National Council delegation was headed by Speaker Saqr Ghobash and included several senior members and officials. The group convened with parliamentary representatives from numerous countries in Zanzibar for discussions on the agenda of the forthcoming assembly. These sessions allow participating bodies to align on priorities and refine proposals ahead of the larger gathering. The meetings took place as part of routine IPU preparations that occur before each assembly.
Discussions during the Tanzania meetings focused on sustainable development, climate change responses and parliamentary contributions to global challenges, the Emirates News Agency stated. Participants examined draft resolutions and committee reports that will feature at the 147th IPU Assembly scheduled for later this year in Luanda, Angola. The FNC team shared perspectives drawn from UAE legislative practices on these topics. Coordination of this nature helps shape the final outcomes adopted by the full IPU membership.
Saqr Ghobash underscored the value of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing transnational issues, according to the news agency account. He stressed that forums such as the IPU enable legislators to build consensus and promote mutual understanding among nations. The Speaker noted the UAE’s consistent engagement in these platforms since joining the union. Such participation reflects broader national efforts to advance multilateral cooperation through legislative channels.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union represents more than 180 national parliaments and serves as the global body for parliamentary dialogue, according to the organisation’s published records. Founded in 1889, it promotes democratic governance, human rights and sustainable development across member states. The UAE’s Federal National Council has maintained active involvement in IPU standing committees and assemblies for years. This latest coordination meeting continues that pattern of contribution to international parliamentary work.
Additional agenda points reviewed in Tanzania included gender equality within legislatures and the role of digital tools in enhancing governance transparency. FNC representatives contributed viewpoints based on UAE advancements in women’s parliamentary representation and technology adoption. The sessions also addressed humanitarian concerns and conflict resolution strategies currently affecting multiple regions. Outcomes from these preparatory talks are set to inform the assembly’s main debates.
The 147th IPU Assembly in Angola will convene parliamentarians from around the world to adopt resolutions on the pre-agreed themes. The FNC delegation’s input during the Tanzania phase ensures UAE priorities are integrated into those documents. Follow-up actions will include implementation tracking of any approved measures at the national level. The Emirates News Agency indicated that the meetings concluded successfully with agreed positions among participating groups.
