The WAM article outlined the life of Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi, who was born in 718 and became a central figure in the Basran school of Arabic grammar through his original contributions to multiple disciplines. His work as a lexicographer, grammarian and musicologist influenced not only Arabic but also the prosody of Persian, Turkish, Kurdish and Urdu, according to linguistic historians. The scholar’s theories emerged during a period when Arabic was transitioning from an oral tradition to a systematically documented language, establishing frameworks that later experts expanded.

Linguistic historians credit Al-Farahidi with compiling Kitab al-Ayn, recognized as the oldest extant Arabic dictionary, which organized entries based on the phonetic points of articulation of letters rather than strict alphabetical sequence. The dictionary, starting with the letter ayn to reflect sounds formed in the throat, provided a comprehensive catalogue of Arabic vocabulary drawn from classical sources. This phonetic approach highlighted his pioneering role in phonology and offered a model for subsequent lexicographical works that added only illustrative examples to his foundation.

A 2023 study published in Cogent Arts and Humanities described how Al-Farahidi developed the science of arud to subject classical Arabic poetry to detailed phonological analysis, classifying its meters and rhythms with mathematical precision. He created rules for poetic composition that ensured preservation of traditional forms while enabling systematic study, the paper noted. His innovations in this field addressed the complexity of Arabic verse that had previously relied on inherited talent rather than codified principles.

Historical accounts state that Al-Farahidi refined the harakat system of diacritical marks, replacing indistinct dots with distinct shapes for fatha, damma and kasra to facilitate accurate reading and interpretation of texts including the Quran. These vowel markers, which remain standard in Arabic script, simplified writing and reduced ambiguity in pronunciation. His student Sibawayh built directly on these grammatical and morphological insights to produce Al-Kitab, the foundational text of Arabic syntax.

Further academic research shows that Al-Farahidi’s influence extended to cryptography, where his Book of Cryptographic Messages introduced early methods of cryptanalysis that later informed scholars such as al-Kindi. He also authored works on musicology and harmony that connected linguistic rhythms to melodic structures. Multiple early Islamic writers, including Al-Anbari, described him as the master of Arabic literature and the most knowledgeable scholar of his era.

The WAM report emphasized Al-Farahidi’s role in training a generation of linguists including al-Asmai and laying groundwork for comparative studies between Arabic and ancient Semitic languages such as those of Yemen. His dictionary and prosody texts continue to serve as references in modern Arabic language education and computational linguistics. Historians consistently rank him among the outstanding geniuses of the Muslim world for transforming language into a structured field of scientific inquiry.
