The Emirates News Agency reported that President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan sent a congratulatory message to President Joko Widodo of Indonesia on the occasion of the country’s Independence Day. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, dispatched similar messages to the Indonesian president. These high-level greetings reflect the close diplomatic relationship that has been cultivated between the two countries over many years. The annual practice of exchanging such messages on national occasions serves to reaffirm mutual goodwill at the leadership level.

Indonesia marks its Independence Day each year on August 17 to commemorate the 1945 proclamation of sovereignty. The UAE and Indonesia established formal diplomatic relations in 1976, laying the groundwork for expanded cooperation in economic and other fields, according to bilateral records. Such traditions of correspondence between the nations’ leaders have become a regular feature of their interstate engagement.

Bilateral trade between the UAE and Indonesia has crossed the $5 billion mark in recent assessments, with both countries aiming to reach $10 billion by 2027, the Observer Research Foundation Middle East noted. The UAE-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement signed on 1 July 2022 and effective since 1 September 2023 grants improved market access for more than 90 percent of tariff lines and 94 percent of trade value, according to the UAE Ministry of Economy. The pact also promotes an open environment for cross-border services and investment between the two sides.

The UAE has outlined plans to invest $10 billion in Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund to back infrastructure, tourism and agriculture initiatives, as detailed in partnership announcements. Around 36,000 Indonesian workers were employed in the UAE as of 2020, contributing to key economic sectors, diplomatic profiles show. These labour and investment flows add practical depth to the political ties maintained at the highest levels.

Officials continue to identify opportunities in energy, technology and food security to build upon the existing Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement framework, the Ministry of Economy has indicated. Enhanced access for service providers and non-discriminatory trade provisions form core elements of the accord now in operation. The partnership is expected to sustain momentum in diversifying and strengthening economic links between the UAE and Indonesia.
