The authority’s latest move follows directives from Sharjah Ruler HH Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi to enhance sustainability across the emirate. It targets the installation of water-saving devices in 2,000 homes in Mughaider as an initial step in the new phase. SEWA plans to cover more than 45,000 homes with over 750,000 devices in total. The programme is designed to promote sustainability and encourage responsible resource management among residents.
Earlier efforts saw more than 210,000 devices installed in 14,000 homes, according to SEWA data. Those installations resulted in a 62 percent decrease in water use and a 59 percent enhancement in lighting consumption. The positive results have paved the way for the current large-scale expansion.
The implementation involves more than 12 teams working with dedicated equipment to ensure timely completion. An eight-component framework guides the entire process, from initial database setup through to post-installation evaluation, the authority explained. This methodical approach allows for effective tracking of water savings and resident feedback. SEWA has stressed the need for clear communication with homeowners throughout the project.
By reducing water consumption, the initiative supports Sharjah’s broader environmental objectives and helps ease pressure on water resources, SEWA reported. Participating households are expected to see noticeable reductions in their utility bills following the upgrades. The authority continues to monitor the programme’s impact as it rolls out to additional areas.
The expansion to Mughaider forms part of a comprehensive strategy that has already proven effective in pilot areas such as Al Rahmaniya, where 4,015 homes were targeted for completion by the end of July. Officials believe that widespread adoption of these devices will contribute significantly to long-term sustainability. The programme also includes surveys to assess customer satisfaction and actual savings achieved.
Residents in the targeted homes will receive the installations at no cost as part of the authority’s service. SEWA has urged cooperation from citizens to facilitate smooth execution of the works. This phase marks a key milestone in the utility’s drive toward greater efficiency in water and energy use.
