According to the Emirates News Agency, Sovereignty excelled on his return to Saratoga by claiming a commanding victory in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes, where the Godolphin homebred put a competitive field of older horses to the sword. The 2025 Horse of the Year had secured imposing wins at the venue in the Belmont Stakes, Jim Dandy Stakes and Travers Stakes the previous summer yet arrived off defeats in both of his four-year-old outings. Ridden by Junior Alvarado for trainer Bill Mott, the four-year-old broke well before tacking over to sit in a clear fifth as the race unfolded over nine furlongs.

Nitrogen, the champion filly, battled Magnitude for the early lead while Sovereignty briefly dropped to last of the seven runners some 12 lengths off the pace at the halfway point. The colt made strong headway around the field turning for home, ranging up on the outside of Antiquarian and Magnitude to seize second early in the straight before reeling in the leader. Sovereignty forged clear in the final furlong to score by an easy 4 3/4 lengths in a final time of 1:47.91 on a fast track, data from BloodHorse shows.

Michael Banahan, director of bloodstock for Godolphin USA, welcomed the public response to the performance. “I’m especially glad that all these people here today got to see Sovereignty perform. They really have bought into him, just like at the Travers and Belmont last year. He’s really got a great following, and it was great for him to put on a show for them today against one of the best Whitney fields we have seen in our lifetime. It was super to see him do that.” Banahan noted the depth of the opposition assembled for the $1 million contest while praising the manner in which the horse delivered for his connections and fans.

Bill Mott, who saddled the winner, described the outcome as a relief after recent setbacks. “Absolutely without a doubt, this was a relief. He showed up today. He did what we thought he could do. He didn’t let us down.” The trainer highlighted that Sovereignty appreciated the racetrack conditions and performed as expected against a quality group, adding that the crowd reaction upon the horse’s return to the winner’s circle was exceptional. Mott confirmed the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup remains the next target if all goes well.

Junior Alvarado, who guided Sovereignty to victory, outlined the instructions he received from the trainer. “Last year, Sovereignty raced a little closer to the pace. Bill told me, ‘just ride him like you ride him. Be confident with him.’ And that’s what I did. He broke good and I let him be wherever he wanted to be. If he wanted to be close, I wasn’t going to take that away. If he was to sit back, I wasn’t going to push him to get closer. Just let him be, and that’s what I did. I knew I got him in gear. He was just eating the ground, so I knew I was good at that point turning for home.” The jockey’s patient ride allowed the colt to produce a decisive stretch kick that carried him past the leaders.

The win earned Sovereignty an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, a benefit extended to Whitney victors by the New York Racing Association. As a son of a prior Kentucky Derby winner, the Godolphin colt had captured the 2025 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes en route to Horse of the Year honors. His latest success at Saratoga reinforces his status among the leading Thoroughbreds of his generation ahead of the remainder of the season.
