The Emirates News Agency reported that President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conferred the First-Class Order of Zayed II on the Ambassador of the French Republic. This move comes as a recognition of the ambassador’s contributions to the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the UAE and France. His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, presented the order during a special reception held at the ministry’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed emphasised the depth of the strategic relations that bind the two nations.
In his address, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed praised the ambassador for his dedicated work throughout his diplomatic tenure in the UAE. The French ambassador expressed sincere thanks to the UAE President for the honour bestowed upon him. He also acknowledged the assistance provided by various UAE government entities that supported his efforts to advance the historic relations between the two friendly countries.
According to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, formal diplomatic relations between the UAE and France date back to 1974. Over the decades, the partnership has grown to encompass defense, culture, education and economic fields. French companies have a significant presence in the UAE, contributing to major projects across the federation.
Figures from the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs show that bilateral trade between the two countries reached EUR 10.8 billion in 2025. The UAE serves as France’s primary trading partner in the Gulf region, with French exports including aircraft, perfumes and pharmaceuticals. This economic linkage complements the broader strategic alliance that includes cooperation in renewable energy and space exploration.
The Order of Zayed is the highest civil decoration in the UAE, named after the nation’s founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, official descriptions state. The First Class Order of Zayed II is frequently awarded to foreign ambassadors who have excelled in fostering positive relations with the country. Similar honours have recently been conferred on ambassadors from India, China and the United States, according to records from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Such diplomatic gestures reflect the UAE’s approach to building robust international partnerships. The award to the French ambassador underscores the mutual respect and shared interests that define the bilateral relationship. The two countries continue to coordinate on regional and global issues of common concern.
