The award’s records show that previous cycles have drawn 2,012 participants from 62 countries, with UAE nominees totalling 161 and yielding 30 winners among them. This international participation has helped build a network of experts dedicated to improving date palm productivity and resilience. The secretariat expects similar or higher engagement for the 2027 session given growing interest in agricultural innovation.
A recent speech by the FAO director-general highlighted that the UN General Assembly will consider declaring 2027 the International Year of Date Palm, coinciding with the award timeline. Date palms play a critical role in the economies of arid regions, supporting food security and generating income for farming communities across the Middle East and North Africa. The award aims to spotlight technologies that address challenges such as drought tolerance and efficient irrigation.
Four main categories will be open for submissions, the general secretariat reported, encompassing outstanding research studies, modern technological applications, distinguished producers and innovative cooperatives. Each entry must include documented evidence of impact along with supporting materials for review. The evaluation process emphasises originality, sustainability and potential for widespread adoption in similar climates.
Successful recipients typically receive cash prizes, commemorative medals and official recognition at a dedicated ceremony held in Abu Dhabi. Past honorees have leveraged the award to forge new research partnerships and expand their projects regionally. The programme also runs parallel competitions in areas such as date palm photography and poetry to broaden public engagement.
UAE agricultural statistics indicate the country maintains millions of date palm trees that yield substantial annual harvests, reinforcing its position as a global leader in the sector. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has supported related initiatives that align with the award’s goals of advancing best practices.
